Water Damage at Home

From malfunctioning dishwashers to leaky roofs, water damage varies in source and scale. Wherever it starts, it can result in serious harm to the structure and fixtures indoors. Porous surfaces like floors and walls are particularly vulnerable to fungal growth when flood damage is neglected. The Paul Davis specialists are the ones to call when your property experiences water damage.

Before Paul Davis Pros Arrive

Before a Paul Davis technician arrives, there are different steps you can do to make the process faster. You need to move quickly to salvage the possessions in your home from water damage.

The first step to take is to assess the safety of your property. We all know that water and electricity are a hazardous mixture, so search for electrical hazards around your home before you begin cleanup. Even when turned off, exposed wiring or wet electronics can present a hazard. To avoid accidents, shut down all breakers and circuits in your home to avoid electrocution.

First Things First

A serious flood can leave everything you own dampened. As soon as your property is safe to enter, move all your possessions. Use a dry, flat area to lay books, magazines and other paper items. Magazines and paper or inked items should be placed on a dry, flat area. This also includes little tabletop items, such as lamps and knickknacks. The hard work begins when you’ve moved books and other small items.

To start the drying process, we recommend air movers and your home’s AC in your property to push air throughout the area. Wipe or mop wet surfaces like shelves to make sure smaller pools of sitting water have been cleaned. Though you may want to try, never use a regular home vacuum cleaner to remove water. The average vacuum isn’t equipped to suck up puddles of water. When you’re ready to move furniture, stack furniture such as heavy chairs using wooden and cement blocks to above them away from the the wet areas.

Water adds weight to surfaces, carpets, and fabrics. This additional weight makes rugs, leather goods and fur hard to move. If you must move a large fabric item, lift carefully. Hang clothing, draperies and other fabrics away from the soaked area to dry thoroughly. Things such as these might not be salvaged easily.

The same water weight that damages carpets and rugs can damage your home’s foundation. Floors and ceilings will warp when they absorb too much water weight, it’s best to avoid these areas.
